IELTS SPEAKING PITFALLS

IELTS speaking tests sometimes are assumed as less challenging than any other skills in terms of type of questions. However, some candidates have fallen into ‘pitfalls’ during the test. Here are some of the IELTS Speaking Test pitfalls that cost test takers precious points:

1.Accent = no, Pronunciation = YES!

IELTS test is a test for non–native speakers, and what it matter most is how to pronounce the word correctly rather than trying to imitate the accent of native speakers. Some candidates perhaps misguided about the difference between speaking with an accent and mispronouncing the words.

2.Repeat the same words

Don’t overuse the word! Use different words to express the same meaning. Here is the example: It was an interesting experience because I met interesting people and interesting things. As a result, the examiner will give you a minimum score due to your limitation in lexical resource.

3.Consistency in using tenses

Here is the common problem for among the majority of the test takers. Frequently, when they have to describe something in the past events they mix the use of past tense and present tense. Here is the example: When we were young, we like to watch TV with our colleagues. It will lower your score as it is considered as inaccurate grammar. To avoid these mistakes, always remember the correct tenses before answering the question.

4.Overuse of Verbal Fillers

Verbal fillers are meaningless syllables, such as: em, uh, um, like, I mean, that you will say before you are expressing the next ideas. It is quite obvious that the overuse of verbal fillers will greatly influence your language fluency. However, you may use these words to associate and construct your idea, or before you start answering question, like “Well, I mean…”

In order to avoid these problems, it is important to develop the awareness of pitfalls and provide yourself with adequate materials. Being familiar with the test format and procedures will be reflected in your score. Good luck!
