General Information about TOEFL and IELTS (Part II)

In TOEFL and IELTS test, preparation means everything. The aim of the preparation is to enhance students’ performance in taking standardized tests such as TOEFL and IELTS. Besides setting your target score and focusing on study, there are other strategies that essential to honing your skills in doing the test, such as:

Plan your study

Without a doubt, with the amount of material that we need to study before taking the test sometimes put burden on our shoulders. In other words, students get stressed and overwhelmed. To tackle this problem, it is suggested to plan your study.

Firstly, organize your schedule. Make a to-do lists about what you need to study during a period of time, it could be weekly or monthly to-do list. Then, specify the time for each skill. By having your plan in details, it will assist you to set the flow of learning until the exam day.

Familiarize yourself with the test format

It is crucial to familiarize yourself with the test format because it will help you to understand the content of the test, such as: question and task types and also their rules and regulations. TOEFL IBT® test takes 4,5 hours long. The test is done orderly: Listening (60-90 minutes); Speaking (±20 minutes), Writing (50 minutes) and Reading (60-80 minutes). On the other hand, IELTS test takes 3 hours long. The test is done orderly: Listening (40 minutes; 30 minutes on records and 10 minutes for answer transferring), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (±20 minutes). One of the difference regarding the test format is TOEFL is predominantly multiple – choice questions, while IELTS more short essay and filling–gap information.
